Multiple Exposure
For well over a decade, the Puerto Rican model Joan Smalls has been a fashion favorite, breaking new ground as a Latina woman in an industry that has only recently rushed to expand its definition of beauty. A mainstay of runways, editorials, and campaigns, Smalls is familiar with being the first, and she has made it a crucial part of her platform to ensure that she is remembered as the first of many. To that end, she stars in our latest fashion cover story in an array of some of the most exciting young designers at work today, including last year's tenth-anniversary LVMH Prize winner Setchu and joint Karl Lagerfeld Prize winners Bettter and Magliano. Photographed by our fashion director Melissa Levy and styled by John Handford last summer on the streets of Paris, Smalls carries the range of innovative designs with the ease and confidence of a veteran, her many sides captured in multiple exposures and collages by our creative directors Graphic Services. It's powerful proof that, even after all these years, the icon has more to show.
Be one of the first to see this story and many more in print by preordering our seventh issue here. Smalls has selected MUMAS Renaciendo, which supports Puerto Rican women and mothers through education and community assistance, as the recipient of proceeds from direct sales of CERO07.
