The fashion industry is built around the promotion of the new and the next, a focus that for decades has brought profound cultural changes that have helped shape our society. In recent years, however, the constant churn of every season has become entangled with a recognition of the waste produced in pursuit of more and more product. With nearly all designers promoting their own (sometimes dubious) sustainable initiatives, however, the better question to ask is not which to buy, but why.
For our Fall issue, we asked a handful of our closest friends, from designers Phillip Lim and Dion Lee to design director Selina Elkuch and stylist Shibon Kennedy, to contribute their most beloved vintage pieces from their own closets for an editorial celebrating the idea of reuse and reinterpretation photographed by Nagi Sakai and styled by our fashion director Melissa Levy. The vintage experts behind the David Casavant Archive, the Albright Fashion Library, and James Veloria have all selected some of their most treasured items as well to dress Alva Claire in a story that offers a chance to revisit our own collections through new eyes.
